I. FEATURED TOPIC

The Battle of Jericho: Did it happen like the Bible says?

Though archaeology has produced much evidence about the storied and deep history of Jericho, the controversy remains as to whether parts of this history occurred like the Bible says it did. Jericho has shown evidence of occupation since 9000 BC - making it one of the oldest cities on the face of the earth. It's role in the Bible is central to the Conquest of Canaan by Israel under Joshua.

Yet it is this part of Jericho's history which remains a topic of controversy. Everybody agrees to the extreme antiquity of Jericho; and the city's importance to the region throughout history, mainly due to the location of a natural spring of fresh water nearby. Yet when it comes to the role of Jericho in the Old Testament, hardly the same sense of unity exists. In fact, it is quite the opposite as views diverge widely and passionately about the archaeology of Jericho and its support, or lack thereof, of the Biblical account.

Explore for yourself the archaeology of Jericho. Dive into the dramatic and fascinating account of the Battle of Jericho.

How December 25th Became Christmas

Why is December 25th Christmas? It is unlikely a census was called for in the winter, thus requiring all of Israel to travel in dangerous and inclement conditions. Shepherds would not have been in the fields with their sheep had snow been on the ground. So how did December become associated with Jesus' birth?

Why Does God Seem So Angry in the Old Testament?
www.csmonitor.com

by Randy Dotinga

With Hollywood's latest Biblical endeavor,Exodus: Gods and Kings, new focus is on God and the Old Testament narrative. The question common to many is: Why does God seem so angry in the Old Testament?

'How Human is God' writer Mark S. Smith explains why God is depicted differently in the Old and New Testaments and why he is sometimes shown as an angry figure.

Despite Hollywood's propensity to mock and deride Christianity, God, the Bible and Christians, it is not against the amount of money it can make on Biblical films. While these movies are interesting, one should recognize it is not Hollywood's goodness, ironically, but rather its greed which has led to the production of these movies.

III. Digging in the Bible

Fierce arguments flow when discussing the Bible in terms of Archaeology. What cannot be denied, however, is that the Bible has helped identify many locations and places for Archaeology; and conversely Archaeology has shed invaluable light on the people and places mentioned in the Bible. For instance, the Philistines were once thought to be a mythical people, created by ancient Israel. That line of thought was debunked when archaeology turned up evidence of the Sea Peoples, and their cities were exactly where the Bible had placed them.

Researchers: Asteroid destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah
www.foxnews.com

Contributed by London Times
The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis is one of the Bible’s most fascinating and mysterious accounts. The biblical narrative suggests fire from the sky rained down upon the cities, initiated by God, in the form of brimstones was responsible for Sodom and Gomorrah’s dramatic destruction. Can science prove this happened in our remote and distant past? Does scientific evidence exist which suggest this episode from Genesis really happened?

V. THE BIBLE IN SPACE

Fascinatingly enough, discoveries in deep space have been shown to actually corroborate parts of the Creation narrative in Genesis. The Bible contains numerous verses on the heavens and stars, and the ancients were obsessed with space - thus it is important to stay in touch with what's going on up there.

Topic of the Month

The God of Space

Genesis 1:6-7 – “Then God said, ‘Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.’ God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.”

Psalms 148:4 – “Praise Him, highest heavens, and the waters that are above the heavens!”

The origin of water is a highly sought after explanation scientists and astronomers are continually seeking. What they don’t know, the Bible does, for the origin of water is thoroughly discussed in Genesis 1:2, 6-10. Genesis 1:9 states the “waters below the heavens be gathered into one place”, thus the separation of water and land ON EARTH.

Yet what about the “waters which were above the expanse” mentioned just two verses earlier in Genesis 1:7, or “the waters that are above the heavens” from Psalms 148? This water is not included in the “waters below the heavens” of Genesis 1:9, for this water is not on earth, but above the expanse, or firmament/heaven/space. Yet, we learn nothing else of these mysterious waters “which were above the expanse”.

Perhaps our modern astronomers are just now catching up with the “waters which were above the expanse” from the ancient book of Genesis.

Mystery of the Origin of Earth's Water Deepens

Mysteries of Space & the Bible

The Van Allen belts protect dangerous radiation from reaching the Earth’s surface, thus allowing life on Earth to propagate and flourish. A new “wall” was discovered within the belts which stops dangerous elements cold in their tracks which was previously unknown to scientists and astronomers. They are at a loss to explain the origin of this mysterious wall which protects life on Earth.

“The scientists searched for possible sources of the new found wall. They ruled out human-generated transmissions…”

Perhaps the answer can be found in the questions God asked His servant Job in Job 38:31-33.

“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the cords of Orion? Can you lead forth a constellation in its season, and the Bear with her satellites? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens, or fix their rule over the earth?”

God’s point to Job was mankind cannot know everything about God’s creation, and sometimes it’s not our place to know certain things. The modern world has, in fact, proved this notion to be true. Despite mankind’s great technological advancements and stunning scientific achievements – there is still much we do not know and much we cannot explain.
